Building permits: Shediac records an excellent first quarter
Shediac, NB - The Town of Shediac is off to a very positive start in 2024, with almost $25 million worth of building permits at the end of the first quarter of the year. The residential, multi-residential and commercial construction sectors are all up compared to the same period in 2023. However, it is the granting of an industrial sector permit worth over $17 million that has given the municipality such an excellent start to the year.
Seventeen residential building permits valued at just over $1.36 million were issued in this first quarter, compared with $925,828 in 2023. In the multi-residential sector, the Town of Shediac saw a significant increase in the first quarter of 2024, reaching nearly $5 million in value on seven projects. Last year, only $220,000 worth of permits were granted from January to March. Finally, in the commercial sector, the municipality achieved a value of $261,743 in the first months of the year. Comparing these three sectors between 2024 and 2023, the Town of Shediac recorded an increase of over $6.5 million in the first quarter.
"It is essential that the Town of Shediac maintain a good pace in its development, while ensuring a good balance of all aspects such as the environment and the economy," said Shediac Mayor Roger Caissie.
The coastal town's main strategy remains to increase its population, offer the services needed to keep residents safe and active, while continuing to attract local and outside investors.
The year 2024 also promises to be a promising one on the industrial front. A major project has already been announced, with the construction of a 139,000 sq. ft. cold storage warehouse in the Scoudouc industrial park. This project represents a significant contribution to first-quarter earnings. This industrial permit alone generates a value of $17.5 million in construction permits in the first quarter.
"With projects like the cold-storage warehouse in the Scoudouc Industrial Park, and with the growth in population and in the value of permits issued over the past four years, Shediac is increasingly on the radar of investors," says Danny Pellerin, Director of Economic Development and Tourism.
The Town of Shediac's Economic Development and Tourism Department believes that 2024 is shaping up to be a very positive year, thanks in part to the announcement of a major public infrastructure project and the continued growth of the residential construction sector.
“The provincial government is expected to announce the location of the new anglophone K-12 school in Shediac in the near future," says Pellerin. “In addition, construction continues in rapidly developing subdivisions such as Domaine Beauséjour and Domaine des Faisans.”
After three consecutive record-breaking years since 2020, the Town of Shediac has surpassed all records in recent years, reaching a total of more than $105 million in building permits in 2023. This is the first time in its history that the municipality has eclipsed the $100 million mark.
"Our municipality is experiencing significant growth, and we must continue on this path, while placing our priority on those aspects that make Shediac one of the best places to live, work and do business," emphasized Shediac Mayor Roger Caissie.
